Objectives

The main goal of the Stress and Rescue Diver course is to equip divers with the knowledge and skills needed to:

  • Recognize stress in themselves and in other divers.
  • Handle emergency situations effectively and confidently.
  • Perform rescues in both water and surface situations.
  • Provide first aid and manage life-threatening emergencies in diving.

The course teaches divers how to prevent accidents by identifying stress indicators and reacting appropriately in emergency situations, potentially preventing incidents before they occur.

Structure

The Stress and Rescue Diver Program is divided into theory lessons and practical skills sessions. The key components include:

  1. Recognizing Diver Stress: Learn to identify the signs of stress in yourself and other divers. Stress can come from factors such as difficulty with buoyancy, equipment malfunction, panic, fatigue, or environmental conditions (e.g., strong currents).
  2. Self-Rescue Techniques: Understanding how to manage your own stress and how to handle common underwater issues such as losing your regulator, dealing with panic, or being separated from your dive buddy.
  3. Rescue Techniques for Others: Learn various methods to assist distressed divers. This includes:
    1. Surface rescues: How to assist a diver who is struggling on the surface, including supporting them to safety.
    2. Underwater rescues: Techniques for bringing an unconscious diver to the surface and safely bringing them to shore or the boat.
    3. Assisting a panicked diver: Learning how to calm and control a diver in panic to prevent further escalation.
    4. Buddy-Assistance: How to assist your dive buddy in distress, including tow techniques and helping them remove their gear in emergency situations.
  4. Simulation of Emergency Scenarios: You’ll practice realistic rescue situations in controlled conditions, applying the skills and techniques learned to manage distressed divers and provide appropriate care.
  5. First Aid: The course includes basic first aid, including CPR and rescue breathing, as well as managing injuries and medical issues that may arise from diving accidents.

Duration

The Stress and Rescue Diver Program typically lasts 2-3 days, depending on the location and the number of students in the class.

The course includes both classroom sessions for theory and confined water or open water practice for skill development.

Certification

Upon successfully completing the course, you’ll receive the SSI Stress and Rescue Diver certification, which is recognized worldwide.

This certification qualifies you to assist in emergency situations and perform rescues while diving, providing you with greater safety and confidence when diving in various conditions.
